Emergency assistance for most vulnerable drought-affected households in priority districts of Zimbabwe

CARE, Nutrition Action Zimbabwe (NAZ), and Padare are proposing integrated assistance to the most vulnerable drought-affected households in Gokwe North and Mutare Districts. Food voucher assistance to meet immediate food needs during the peak lean season (4 months) is complemented by prevention of undernutrition and referrals; supporting institutional capacity strengthening for community management of acute malnutrition; and supporting mobile community outreach in hard-to-reach areas in the targeted wards. Nutrition messaging is integrated alongside food assistance activities. A specific focus on Protection is included especially in relation to elevated gender-based violence (GBV) risks and negative coping mechanisms associated with drought. The action will engage trained counsellors will provide psychosocial support and referrals to survivors and people at-risk during distributions and community mobilization activities. Robust multi-sectoral referral mechanisms will facilitate an integrated response through smooth transitions between the food assistance, nutrition, and protection components. This will guarantee that households identified through any entry point can access the full spectrum of services they require, fostering better continuity of care and more comprehensive support. Finally, the action includes a Crisis Modifier as prepositioning for a potential rapid onset emergency (e.g. flooding) affecting the targeted populations allowing the partners to launch a rapid response for emergency life-saving needs.
